While I was in Egypt I travelled to the ruins of the ancient city of
Bubastis.
Now called Tel Basta, in the Al-Sharqia Governate which is in the Nile
Delta - 80 km Northeast of Cairo.
This is all that remains of the
Temple of Bastet, The Cat Goddess of ancient Egypt.
Bastet is the Goddess of the home, domesticity, women's secrets, cats,
fertility, and childbirth. She protected the home from evil spirits and
disease, especially diseases associated with women and children.
Once a Temple to Bastet, now it is a ruin. Razed by earthquakes and pillaged for is stones to build other things. Nothing lasts as it was dreamed
Today, a 4-lane freeway runs past Tel Basta, to directly south of the modern city of Zagazig. Which is in the Delta - north of Cairo.
The temple of Bastet served the goddess Bastet, in the Old Kingdom. Bastet was associated with fertility and often acted as a protective deity. Originally, Bastet was depicted as a lioness, and later as a cat.
