Nice to see. Just make sure they are not all out on your counters at the same time
In this guide, you’ll gain insights into making your compact living space
functional and comfortable. Just dealing with space-saving kitchen appliances,
will be a start to getting into the frame of mind where you can feel confident
about transforming your small abode into a sanctuary of convenience with
style.
And selecting the right appliances is no exception.
Compact living is a Lifestyle and Design philosophy that is focussed maximising
the functionality of limited space without compromising comfort. Much like
being on a ship at sea or on the International Space Station.
The challenges posed by Twenty First urbanization require innovative solutions
to meet the need for sustainable housing. In densely populated cities,
every inch of your living space must be optimized to serve a purpose.
A clutter-free and efficient environment promotes a philosophy that encourages
a minimalist mind-set that is focussed on a sustainable lifestyle.
Compact Living isn’t just about a smaller home. It’s also about being
conscious of conspicuous consumption and promoting the reduction the carbon
footprint that necessarily results from larger living spaces.
While this article has been written from the vantage point of a city dweller
– I have had much experience in living in a variety of dwellings that fall
into the category of “Compact”.
These range from 5 star luxury safari bungalows in the middle of the African
bush, to a staff caboose on a long-distance railway freight train. Apart
from opulence – or the lack thereof – one thing stands out. Every available
space is utilised. There are no unnecessary bits and bobs to clutter up
the living areas.

I have owned a few houses. With children and pets and all that goes with
it. Including garages packed to ceiling with stuff that was “put away for
another day” – that either got sold, given away or thrown away. A torrent
of poorly spent money – and a source of angry irritation.
But it Was Fun at the time.
Now I live with Just What I Need and Want. And I have Peace of Mind.victim
of "Buying Junk You Dont Need"! I cut through the veil of marketing BS
to present you with the "short-and-sweet", no-nonsense version - of Important
Things to Buy - That Work.
Embracing compact living doesn’t mean compromising comfort or functionality.
Instead, it’s about being intentional with your choices. The key to appliances
is to focus on items that serve multiple purposes and can integrate into
your limited space.
Take a good hard look at your daily routines. What appliances do you REALLY
use most frequently? Which ones are going to “ornamental”? Clarify your
priorities.
To paraphrase the old carpentry adage: "Measure twice, cut once". You
must Meausure Twice. Buy Once: Measure the available space for each appliance
carefully. A few centimetres will make a huge difference in your compact
environment.
Write down the measurements and keep them ready whilst shopping - physically
or online.
And if you are going shopping - TAKE YOUR TAPE MEASURE WITH YOU. Trust
me on this.
In a compact kitchen, every inch counts. Buy appliances that have multiple
functions. A microwave that doubles as a convection oven, reducing the
need for separate appliances.
A blender that can whip smoothies and grind coffee beans are first prize
for Compact Living.
If oven space is limited, consider investing in a countertop oven that
can handle baking, toasting, and more.
These Multi-functional appliances ensure you get the most out of your
small kitchen without crowding the countertops. This way, you can streamline
your collection without sacrificing functionality.
Cooking in a compact space requires some creativity. The USS Los Angeles
nuclear submarine is equipped to carry Tomahawk cruise missiles. The 3
x 4 metre galley keeps up to 150 submariners fed and happy, 24 hours a
day.
So, you will make a plan. In your Compact Lifestyle - you can become creative
and explore your own abilities to re-imagine your environment.
For example: Induction cooktops are not only energy-efficient but also
incredibly space-friendly.
Prioritise Multi-Functionality:Given the limited space, appliances
that serve multiple purposes should be at the top of your list.
Read Product Reviews:Before making a purchase, read user reviews online.
Real-life experiences can shed light on issues you might not have considered.
Look for appliances that are space-efficient and reliable in the long run.
Look for Space-Saving Designs:Manufacturers today understand the demands
of compact living. Seek out appliances specifically designed for small
spaces. These often come with innovative features that make the most of
every available space.
Look for Energy-Efficient Machines:Remember. Compact Living includes
the sustainable utilisation of electricity and water and the benefits of
not having to pay for wasting those resources.
It's Fun! Or it can be - if you put your mind to the challenge. Imagine
you are living on the International Space Station.
Living in a compact space, requires a synergy between creativity and the
need for lifestyle efficiency - and becomes paramount in selecting the
right appliances for your Compact Lifestyle.
Creative thinking offers you the opportunity to find innovative solutions
that maximize the space of your living area.
Keep your unique needs in mind. Prioritizing energy efficient appliances
will reduce utility bills and contribute to a sustainable environment.
Remember, each appliance must serve a purpose and seamlessly integrate
into your daily routine, making your Compact Living space functional and
a delight.
