For most people, the automobile is the second-most-expensive thing you can buy - after buying a house. Just like in the days of the cowboy - the Horse was the most expensive thing a man could expect to buy.
This is why horse-theft as deemed a hanging offence - because it was essentially 'stealing a mans life or livelihood'.

This is how "Theft - Grand Auto" became such a punishable crime.

On a lighter note - a large portion of the American population has been CONCEIVED in the back of, on, or beside a car.
The romance of love extended to a romance of the automobile.

As can be witnessed by the huge sums of moolah spent on reconditioning and re-building cars.
